Ramesh Agarwal: Moving Emotions, Not Just Goods
"Shifting home is not just about moving things. The person also shifts the memories of the past years with these traps. Feelings relate to their memories. If the landlord owns a 30-year-old radio set in non-working condition, it has almost no value in the market but is of great value to the landlord because that radio could be their father or grandfather's possession. The team must value the item properly." These are the words of Ramesh Agarwal, the Owner of Agarwal Packers and Movers Limited.
When Ramesh Agarwal retired after serving as an airman for many years in the Indian Air Force, he donated all his savings. With a capital of Rs 1, he was still thinking about what to do with his life. A friend from the Air Force advised him to start a company that would provide services for handling goods.
From his experience in the Air Force, he realized how much hassle it takes to shift household goods when the home is changed. He started working in this direction with his younger brother Rajendra Agarwal. In the year 1987, a company called 'Agarwal Household Carrier' was established without any capital. He started working in Hyderabad with a rent of Rs 250. Initially, they worked for the Air Force in four shifts.
The company began to expand its operations. Ramesh Agarwal already knew that only through his team would he reach the people's minds. So, he trained the team all the way. It covered every aspect of packing and moving, from how to treat customers politely. He often says that even though the latest technology has arrived today using various apps, it is more important to instill human emotions in the ground staff than packing and moving. Truck drivers, the lifeline of the country, faced many difficulties at that time. Ramesh understood this very well, and from the very beginning, on the 4th of every month, they started celebrating 'Darbar Diwas' in which a session of the founder of the company is held and all the people like handlers, packers, drivers are involved. The difficulties they face while working should be discussed and resolved.
In 1993, with the help of GE Capital, the company bought new trucks. Then came a radical change in the logistics business. There were only open body trucks in the market and the canvas that had to be tied with a rope by climbing, and even goods damaged while transporting. To solve this problem, Ramesh made a steel body for the truck with the help of a friend.
Starting in a small room-like office in Hyderabad, Ramesh Agrawal's 'Agarwal Packers and Movers' has more than 125 branches across the country today. Today, with more than 3,000 employees, Agarwal Packers & Movers has entered the Limca Book of World Records for the seventh year in a row for 'Largest Mover of Household Goods.
