Story of a century old interesting journey!
We're going to tell the exciting story of when dignified king Sayajirao Gaikwad ruled over Vadodara city, and during his reign, Vadodara city earned the tag of Sanskari Nagari. We are not advanced at all in the field of medicine, and it would be fair enough to say that the pharma industry was not even in existence at that time. Our present prime minister asks us all to be self-dependent in every field, then this kind of awareness was not there although immense love for the country was at its peak.
Renowned chemist Pro. T. K. Gajjar, gold medalist in chemistry Pro. Koti Bhaskar and Rajmitra Mr. B. D. Amin with the excellent business tact: all three of them came together intending to pave the unique way in the pharmaceutical field when home remedies were believed to be the best option for the cure of any disease. All three of them had common goals of earning reputation not only in the local market but even in the international market and of taking a step towards becoming an independent company. They got an answer in the form of Alembic Chemical Works Company Limited. At that time, they got guidance and support from visionary king Sayajirao Gaikwad, and the incredible journey began, which changed the face of the pharma industry in many ways.
Alembic was one of its kind ventures in our country when it started. Production of pharmaceutical products began with high-quality research and manufacturing. Pro. Koti Bhaskar and Pro. T. K. Gajjar played the significant role of principal director and chief advisor, respectively. Rajmitra Mr. B. D. Amin had saved the company from the troubles many times with his excellent business tact. After starting the business, he kept doing labor work as an ordinary workman in his own company with his friend Mr. S. G. Varti for more than a year. Some might get amazed after seeing such a vast business empire in the present, but the sweat and bloodshed by Mr. Amin is the reason behind the company's firm base.
Alembic was also growing fast together with the industry. In 1940, the company started producing its cough syrup, vitamins, and tonic, which are famous in the present time. This strategy worked very well as these products became successful in the market. Keeping this success in the center, the company started its own research & development center in 1952, and that was a massive thing at that time. As a result, Alembic became the first Indian company to produce 'Penicillin.' The company never looked back afterward. In 1961, the plant of Penicillin was inaugurated by Lal Bahadur Shashtri, prime minister of India then, in Vadodara. Growing at the same pace, once again, Alembic became the first Indian company to manufacture 'Erythromycin' and 'Althrocin.'
The policy of liberalization was very convenient to the pharma industry. Hence other companies were aiming to extend their businesses in other countries as well. Though, Alembic was determined not to take any risk for a while. Many years of experience came in handy for the company as the management carefully studied the international market policies, rights, IP rights, etc. All these preparations helped the management to decide on extending its business in the international market. In 2006, the company got permission from the US FDA. Today, the company is doing business in every significant country of the world.
"We invested a lot in building world-class infrastructure because it was a quite necessary step to go forward in the modern time. We collaborated with many international talents, and we got direct benefit from them in the international market. Our philosophy is that it's better to go forward together than alone because the real growth is hidden. Because of this philosophy, we constantly paid attention to more international collaborations. We're getting direct benefit in the African market due to our one joint venture Alembic MAMI SPA in Algeria." These are the words of the present head of Alembic, Mr. Pranav Amin. (Writer of this story, Lalu, has got a chance to meet Mr. Pranav Amin in person twice. And the respect for him increased after meeting him both the time as he is such a down-to-earth personality.)
Today, Alembic keeps moving forward with the guidance of science, and its State-of-Art, Research, and Development Center are looked up to as a model in our country. Because it spends roughly 13% share of its income on research only, it's also vigilant about the environment, not only for the sake of saying it, but it makes sure that surroundings shouldn't be polluted. They've constructed their own Alembic city in Gorwa of Vadodara, where its corporate office, employee quarters, research facility, manufacturing plants, etc., are destined. If you see from the open space a small gallery beside the cafe on the 6th floor of the corporate office, you will get to see the stunning view of the greenery all around. Besides that, the chirpings of the different birds can be heard there. The company has a strict policy not to harm any trees, plants, or pet animals on campus.
We feel proud of our local brand Alembic if we look back at the historical events during its journey, like British rule, two world wars, independent years of India, License rule, liberalization, and globalization. What do you say?
