Beauty brand from 'Timepass' to 'Timeless'
Almost 33 years ago, a mother of two kids had a lot of spare time after finishing all the household chores. So, she thought of utilizing this time. A hobby of making readymade garments helped her to spend this spare time. The journey started by borrowing only eight thousand rupees has been established as a world-famous brand today. The story is about women's clothing brand âBibaâ and its founder Meena Bindra.
Born into a business family in Delhi, Meena graduated with a degree in history, and at the tender age of 18, she was married to a Navy officer. Meena has been interested in clothing and design since her college days, but she never took up professional training. After marriage, Meena spent almost 20 years caring for children and home. One day, Meena met Devesh - a businessman dealing with block printing. Meena learned from him about printing and mixing different colors. She proposed to her husband and started her own business with a mere loan of Rs. 8,000 from Syndicate Bank.
Initially, Meena made about 40 sets of salwar suits costing less than Rs 200. The women living in the neighborhood bought the set in no time, and Meena made a profit of about Rs 3,000. From this money, they brought new clothes and this time the suits sold out quickly too. Within a year, her garments became popular in the surrounding area, and she had to hire three artisans to complete the orders. Then, even big sellers like Sheetal and Benger started showing interest in the garments made by Meena.
With growing work, the demand for order books and bill-books arose. Meanwhile, the need for the company's name also emerged. In Punjabi culture, daughters are affectionately called 'Biba.' Hence the name 'Biba' was chosen for the company. The name 'Biba' soon became popular. Meena never had to market her garments because of the perfect quality and fitting of her garments.
Meanwhile, his eldest son Sanjay graduated with commerce and joined Meena in business. After Sanjay's joining, Meena started giving full attention to designing. By 1993, Biba was manufacturing about 2000 pieces per month and was popular all over India. A few years later, Shoppers Stop - the first multi-city department store was about to launch in India. They required clothing for women. Therefore they approached Biba, and the company joined them.
The company opened two exclusive outlets in Mumbai in 2004, and to everyone's surprise, both the outlets proved to be very successful with business over 2 million.
Subsequently, the company started launching each of its outlets in large shopping malls. Today, there are about 300 Biba outlets across the country, and the company's revenue has crossed Rs 600 crore.
This is the supreme example of how an ordinary woman transformed her business into a global brand with dedication and hard work.
