Doctor Burman's Dabur
In 1884, a General Practitioner Dr. S.K. Berman launched a campaign to make health care products. He was preparing medicines for diseases like cholera and malaria in a small village near Kolkata. Dr. Berman cured people's diseases through his Ayurvedic medicines.
The news of his magic medicine spread to the area and people started calling him 'Doctor Berman'. After a while, he started a company to produce the same medicine. The company was named 'dabur' on his own name 'Daaktar (Doctor) Berman'.
As popularity grew, Dr. Berman started his own manufacturing plant in 1886. Natural Ayurvedic medicines were preferred at that time. In 1920, the company started its research laboratory to meet the scientific process and quality check requirement. About a century after the company started, the Berman family decided to shift to Delhi.
The Berman family had to divide the company into three different divisions to ensure the operation and management were well undertaken. In 1998, with the change in the business demand, the company management was given to the leadership of professionals after withdrawing ownership. The Berman family was the first business family in India to make such a tough decision.
Today, Dabur India Limited is the oldest manufacturer of Ayurvedic products in India. Dabur, which sold its products in 120 countries, had never done marketing for Ayurveda because in 1990, the company diversified its business through non-Ayurvedic products. Today, non-Ayurvedic products constitute about 40 percent of the company's total sales. The extraordinary development of Patanjali in the country forced Dabur to change its policy. Daber then started marketing as ‘India's first Ayurvedic Company’.
The journey started by a person has now turned into a huge empire. Today, Dabur has become one of the leading companies in the FMCG sector across the world. Dabur Healthcare Division has more than 280 products, including medicines for diseases and body problems, ranging from common colds to serious illnesses. These products include dabur Chavanprash, dabur Hair Oil, Hajmola, Toothpaste etc. which have taken a leading place in our everyday life.
