Indian key of great treasure
A journey that was started by making locks has reached the moon today. Amazing, right? But, it’s a fact. Godrej Aerospace has been associated with ISRO since 1985. Godrej has already worked on rocket engines like PSLV and GSLV. In 2008, India launched Chandrayaan-1 to the satellite under its first lunar mission. Godrej Aerospace contributed to its launch vehicle and lunar orbiter. Then in 2014, Godrej-made Aerospace engine was used in a polar satellite launch vehicle on our first Mission Mars. Godrej’s aerospace components also helped to set up a precise trajectory of the satellite. Godrej Aerospace also provided equipment including the engine for GSLV-3 launcher, orbiter and lander thruster and DSN antenna equipment for the recently launched Chandrayaan-2.
In 1868, Ardeshir Burjorji Sorabji Godrej, the eldest of the six brothers and sisters, was born in a Parsi family. After receiving education in law, in 1894, the young law graduate did not accept a case because of his principles. He left his career as a lawyer and returned to Bombay. He started working in a medicine shop in Mumbai. This was his first step towards making surgical equipment.
In 1897, Ardeshar developed a template for making a more affordable and stronger lock, and established a lock company. Thus, Ardeshar made the locks his key to success. Gradually, other successful products were launched. Ardeshar also designed safe and other things, and patented the design. After a while, he was attracted to making soaps.
He found that animal fat is used in all soaps in the world, which is considered a taboo for vegetarian Hindus. He found a formula for making soap from vegetable oil. Godrej Soap came into existence with the principles of indigenous and non-violence. Ardeshar always followed in the footsteps of Dadabhai Navarroji- his role model. He believed in the philosophy of ‘Made in India’ and said that we too had to be prepared to manufacture the same level of world class products to boycott foreign goods.
Ardesar died in 1936. By then, Godrej and Boys had become a successful company. Meanwhile, Ardesar's younger brother Pirozsha had joined the business. In 1943, the then Governor of Bombay gave Vikheroli village to Pirojsha in an auction. In 1951, the company produced about 1.7 million ballot boxes for the first independent India elections.
When Adi Burjorji Godrej joined the company in the 60s, Godrej became a big company but still relied on trusted products like soap, safe and lock. Adi was the first management graduate of the family to join the profession. He first worked to modernize the management process. The Godrej Soap company was not making a profit, so Adi joined it and took measures like cost cutting and human resource, and focused on joining youth in the management. Adi re-settled the company’s revenue with branding and marketing. Along with his brother Nadir Godrej and cousin Jamshed Godrej, he made international expansion of the company in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
In the 90s, Godrej joined global brands like Procter & Gamble and General Electronic. In the early 21st century, the company divided Godrej Soaps into two categories: Godrej Consumer Products Limited and Godrej Industries. The company then diversified in many areas and moved forward.
Today, Godrej, with about 30,000 employees, has a stake in various sectors like real estate, consumer products, industrial engineering, home appliances, furniture, security, and agriculture products. Today, Godrej is becoming a reliable brand, with the principles of its founder and the skilful leadership of Adi Godrej.
