Proud Indian Brand
A seven decades old Indian company gradually developed in many countries and advanced into many industries and became a global brand today.
In 1945, when India was to be independent in two years, M&M was launched on 2nd October, 1945. M&M means Mahindra & Mohammed, not Mahindra & Mahindra. In fact, JC (Jagdish Chandra Mahindra) and KC (Kailash Chandra Mahindra) both were brothers. The brothers decided to start a company with their friend Ghulam Ali Muhammad. The company decided to join a UK based company to enter the steel trading business.
The company then decided to bring the successful jeep to India. 75 Gypsies were imported from Willis Overland Export Corporation, USA. Their assembly work was done at Mazgaon, Mumbai.
Freedom played a huge role in renaming the company. Led by the partition of India and Pakistan, it became Mahindra & Mahindra from 'Mahindra & Mohamad'. Ghulam Mohammad took his choice over Pakistan at the time of partition and became Pakistan's first finance minister. With the exit of Mohammed from Company, the brothers JC and KC named it 'Mahindra & Mahindra'.
Later, the brothers worked diligently. In collaboration with Mitsubishi Corporation, they imported 5000 tonnes of steel for making wagons. Gradually the company grew and on June 15, 1955, the company decided to register a public partnership. In 1956, the company decided to list shares in the Bombay Stock Exchange.
Mahindra joined hands with US manufacturer International Harvester and decided to manufacture agricultural machinery, construction machinery, trucks, automobiles and household products. The company teamed up with foreign companies to focus on indigenous manufacturing. The plant at Mazgaon was closed and the Kandivali plant was built for the production of tractors and UVs.
Mahindra created a new world of its own with the help of leading companies like Peugeot France, Voltas, Mitsubishi and many more. Mahindra is still the top manufacturer in India.
