***
He was born in Mahuva, Bhavnagar. He completed his schooling in Mahuva. Due to his father’s wish, he studied law at the Mumbai Government Law College. He married Kantaben during college days. He also took part in the freedom fighter movement for some time. Because of his ideals, he abandoned the profession of advocacy which demands to speak lies frequently.
After quitting the practice of advocacy, he was in a dilemma - what to do next? He did not find any other work in Mahuva but he does not want to stay at home and farm. During this time, he got a job in a dying printing press. He had to do his boss's personal work so Balvantbhai quit the job. At that time, Balvantbhai was living with Kantaben in his friend’s godown paying a monthly rent of Rs.14. During his job, Balvantbhai was constantly looking for something new, and in that search he came to know about the import-export business of die. Despite all the restrictions on import, he then started importing bicycles, betel nuts, paper etc. from countries like Germany, Italy, England etc. The business went well but soon because of differences with his partner, Balvantbhai parted.
After leaving the business, he joined a German Company, Fedco. His relationship with Fe dco was very good and after training at German plant, he started his own factory with his younger brother. He named the company ‘Parekh Dyechem Industries’ which is today known as ‘Pidilite Industries’. He started making glue called ‘Fevicol’ in the factory. The name ‘Fevicol’ derived from the German word ‘Call’ means ‘the one which connects two things’. Then, the Rest is the History. Fevicol quickly became popular. Over the time, the company launched several products in the market like M-Seal.
Based on Ogilvy and Piyush Pandey of Medhar, Fevicol still stands today on superb marketing and creative concepts. Through powerful branding and advertising, Fevicol is delivered to every household in the country. Balvantbhai ‘Out of the Box vision’ has also contributed as much as Piyush Pandey.
Balvantbhai, who was generous from the heart, not only gave importance to his business but also spent a lot of time in social services. He donated for schools, hospitals and colleges in Mahuva. Apart from this, he established the ‘Darshak Foundation’ for researching the history of Gujarat and he also donated for the Science City Project to Bhavnagar.
Today Balvantbhai is not amongst us but his journey that started with a small factory at Jacob Circle and only one product has now grown up to 19 manufacturing plants and more than 200 innovative products. Companies that grow with a creative approach become immortal and create a different place in people’s hearts. The world recognizes Fevicol as a product but salutes to Balvantbhai who brought it to this level. We wish sixty-year-old Fevicol to stay standing until the next six hundred years.
