The world's biggest luxury watch brand
Rolex is the world's biggest luxury watch brand, producing around 2,000 watches a day. Rolex was founded on 15th November 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London. The company was initially called Wilsdorf & Davis. In 1919, the company moved from England to Geneva, Switzerland, and was renamed the Rolex Watch Company. It was then renamed 'Montres Rolex, SA' and finally 'Rolex, SA.'
In those days, most watches were kept in pockets and were made in Switzerland. Wilsdorf focused on wristwatches, and with a small Swiss company called Eagler, he built accurate time showing internal machines. He sent the watch to the Swiss School of Horology and the Q Observatory in London for the examination, which gave it the status of a chronometer. It was tested at three different temperatures: In the fridge, at normal temperatures, and in normal ovens. Eagler thus became the first watch to have the status of a chronometer.
In1926, Rolex made the first waterproof watch called Easter. To assure people, they put water-filled showcases in shops in which they dipped their watches. Customers used to believe when they saw that the Rolex was showing the accurate time even though it was submerged in water.
Rolex got another advertisement opportunity soon. Mercedes Glatz became the first woman swimmer to cross the English Channel, but her campaign was hotly debated, so Glatz announced to take up the challenge a second time. Wilsdorf offered her that if she could do this wearing an Easter hat, he would give her a Rolex watch as a gift.
In 1927, when Glatz crossed the English Channel in 15 hours and reached the opposite shore, the Rolex Easter on his wrist was showing the right time, which was proof of being waterproof.
In 1927, Wilsdorf advertised in London's Daily Mailâs front page that the Rolex Easter watch made by him would not be affected by moisture, water, heat, cold, or dust. The Easter clock became popular overnight. Since then, Rolex has experimented with wristwatches and dominated the premium watch market.
The Rolex subsidiary was established in 2008. Rolex watches ranging from 2 lakh rupees to one crore are sold in India nowadays. The average price of a watch sold in India is around four lakh rupees.
