Search for a clerk reached every office today
“Hey, I need a xerox copy. Can you please do one for me?”
We use these lines frequently in our daily life.
We know that Xerox is a company. But the machine in the shop can be of Canon, Konica, Minolta, Ricoh, Sharp or Brother... Whatever it is! But we need to get xerox done. It often seems that the first photocopy machine in the world was created by Xerox, and it became famous in the world. But it is necessary to know the history of this company.
***
Xerox company launched the first photocopy machine in the market. However, it was invented by Chester Carlson who was a normal clerk. Carlson had to make a copy of a patent application during his job. His vision was weak and had arthritis. To solve this problem, Carlson spent months reading several books in the library and experimenting with 'electro-photography' in the kitchen. In October 1937, he registered the photocopier patent.
However, Carlson had no capital to develop the machine. So, he proposed a number of companies like IBM, Codec, GE, RCA to buy his invention. But none of these companies showed interest.
Finally, Haloid corporation acquired all the rights from Carlson and spent $7.5 billion on research for thirteen years. In 1959, the first photocopier machine was launched which cost around $29,500. This photocopier became very popular and by 1965, the company's income had reached $500 million.
The Haloid Corporation means Xerox. In 1906, Xerox was founded which was earlier named Haloid Photographic Company. Initially, the company was making photography papers and related equipment. In 1958, this name was changed to Haloid Xerox.
Today, despite having many competitors in the world, they have retained their position. Apple was about to buy Xerox around 1980, but for some reason the deal was not completed. Today, Xerox is such a brand that without its name, no one gets you a photocopy. You have to speak ‘Xerox’ to get a photocopy.
